Is narcolepsy a psychiatric disorder?

Narcolepsy is not a mental illness, but rather a neurological condition. It is caused by abnormalities in the brain's control of sleep-wake cycles, frequently as a result of the death of neurons in the hypothalamus that produce hypocretin. Cataplexy, excessive daytime drowsiness, and disturbed nocturnal sleep are among the symptoms. Although narcolepsy can have an impact on mood, focus, and day-to-day functioning, these are effects of the disorder rather than proof of a mental illness. Medication and lifestyle practices including regular naps and proper sleep hygiene are combined in management. Artvigil 150, which safely increases daytime alertness and encourages wakefulness under medical supervision, is an often recommended choice.
