Bootstrapped founder here: DIY branding vs. Agency?

Our MVP is ready, and our "branding" is a logo from a friend and messaging we wrote ourselves. It's... fine. But we're about to start outreach to investors and early customers. Is hiring a branding agency for startups a wise investment now, or a luxury for after our seed round? I'm torn between spending our tiny runway on development or on looking legit. Anyone made this call early on?

Tough but crucial call. Think of it this way: Your MVP solves a problem, but your brand is why anyone cares about that solution. For investors and early adopters, a cohesive, professional brand reduces perceived risk and answers "Why you?" instantly. You don't need a $100k agency package. Look for specialists in early-stage startups who offer foundational packagesa solid brand strategy, visual identity, and key messaging. That's not a luxury; it's your go-to-market toolkit. This article on choosing the right branding companies for startups is gold for evaluating who gets the startup grind and can work with realistic budgets.
